Dear Readers,

The NEJM Journal Watch Infectious Diseases editorial board has revisited the articles that we covered during the past year to select the 10 that we feel were the most important.

Topping our list is the recognition of Candida auris as a significant new pathogen. We note studies on antimicrobial therapy including the use of clindamycin for group A streptococcal infections, the increasing concern regarding nephrotoxicity with piperacillin-tazobactam, more-rapid assessment of beta-lactam allergy, and the utility of antimicrobial prophylaxis for dental procedures in patients with prosthetic heart valves.

We also highlight several important studies related to management of HIV and hepatitis C virus disease. Completing our list is a study that assessed the impact of ganciclovir prophylaxis for cytomegalovirus disease in critically ill patients.
